When you experience a stressful period at work or in your personal life, do you find yourself craving simple rituals from your past or yearning to participate in activities you enjoyed as a child? There’s a reason we turn to tradition for comfort: Traditions are a source of stability. They remind us that though forces around us are unpredictable and out of our control, some (very important) things are constant.

An essential component of the Skinny Strong Living program is understanding your own unique spiritual side—including the triggers and motivators of your personal psychological profile. Without getting too technical, it’s about knowing who you are, from the inside out.

As we get older and our lives sometimes move us geographically or socially away from our long-time friends and relatives, it’s natural to feel disconnected or isolated. It’s easy to mistake physical distance for emotional distance, particularly when we hit a rough patch and can’t rely on a comforting hug from a loved one.

But those relationships and connections—especially the ones established when we were young—endure and help us identify our sense of self. Revisiting happy places from our past or continuing family traditions year after year provides us with a little much-needed psychological grounding. No matter how simple or brief, tradition restores peace to our soul and rejuvenates our spirit for tackling unforeseen challenges ahead.

So this holiday season, as you make plans for how you will spend valuable time off and what celebratory rituals you will participate in, keep in mind that the best form of R&R might come from spending a long weekend in your hometown or bunking with your nieces and nephews at your sister’s house. Keep it sweet and simple! The sun and sand can wait till February.
