Think about your morning routine: How does it go? Now think about how you feel as you embark upon your day: Do you feel focused and energized? Rushed and anxious? Unmotivated and still a little drowsy?

What you do each morning sets the tone for how your whole day will go. Regardless of whether you are a “morning person,” there are elements you can incorporate into your a.m. routine—and behaviors you can “skinny” out—that will boost your productivity, and your overall mood, straight through till dusk.

Here are our tips for adding some “Rise and shine!” enthusiasm to your daily wake-up!

  1. Delay your digital check-in. Your first action of the day shouldn’t be reaching for your phone or laptop to check your email. Experts say this practice immediately turns control of your day over to someone else and often introduces fresh anxiety into your mind. Instead, take a few minutes to focus on yourself and your surroundings—admire your sleeping partner or the blooming magnolia tree outside your window. Life is good, and today is a brand-new opportunity to enjoy it.

  1. Detox with warm water and lemon. You’ve probably heard it before, but this simple combo has innumerable health benefits and is a great way to start your morning. Big checkmarks include: Boosting your immune system with lots of vitamin C, detoxifying your liver, aiding digestion, promoting a healthy elimination system, and keeping skin glowing from free-radical-fighting antioxidants.

  1. Get moving. You’ve just been lying flat and motionless for seven or eight hours—it makes sense that your circulatory system needs a jolt. Experts recommend different variations on this theme, from simple stretches to a quick 50 jumping jacks, but the bottom line is that morning is usually the best time to “sweat it up,” because it’s when you’re least likely to be interrupted. With just 10 to 30 minutes of yoga, aerobics, walking, or weight training, you’ll enjoy a boost in your endorphins, metabolic system, and lymphatic system, which removes toxins from the body and helps keep skin clear.

  1. Think about your goals for the day. At Skinny Strong, we encourage positive goal- and intention-setting as an important part of leading a happy, balanced life. The point is not to overwhelm yourself but rather to add a little focus to your day: It helps filter out the clutter. Jot down or mentally make a list of the three or four things you will feel good accomplishing for the day, and then get to it!

  1. Eat a healthy breakfast. Eating breakfast is one of the most common habits we encourage clients to “strong.” Not only does skipping your first meal of the day send you off into the world without proper fuel, it produces a spike in your blood sugar and slows down your body’s metabolic rate. Smoothies or protein shakes are ideal breakfast solutions, because they’re nutritious and fast to prepare and drink (just make sure they aren’t full of added sugar).
