While body typing can seem a bit “fad-like,” our hormonal make-ups influence our body type and this can inform us about our dietary needs and athletic inclinations. Neat, right? There are three main body types: endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph.

Here’s a quick run down of each:

  • Endomorph: If you are an endomorph, you are probably long and lean. Endomorphs usually have lower body fat stores and tend to be natural endurance athletes, like long distance runners. Not surprisingly, Endomorphs have high metabolic rates and have a higher carbohydrate tolerance than other body types. A suggested starting point for nutrition is 55% carbohydrates, 25% protein, and 20% fat.
  • Mesomorph: Mesomorphs have larger bones structures than Endomorphs, have a solid torso and have generally controlled body fat levels. If you are a mesomorph, you probably have a naturally athletic build without really trying. Mesomorphs tend to excel at strength training and sports like soccer. They tend to have higher levels of testosterone and human growth hormone (hence the naturally muscular build) and have a moderate carbohydrate tolerance compared to Endomorphs. A suggested starting point for nutrition is 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat.
  • Ectomorph: If you are an ectomorph, you have a larger bone structure and may find it rather easy to gain weight. Ectomorphs tend to excel at power sports—power lifting. Perhaps not surprisingly, Ectomorphs also tend to have slower metabolic rates and a lower carbohydrate tolerance than other body types. A suggested starting point for nutrition is 25% carbohydrates, 35% protein, and 40% fat.

Now, remember: Our body types are not “absolute truths,” they are more a guide to what our natural tendencies may be, based on our unique hormone composition. Using these guidelines as a starting place, you may better understand your body as well as unlock some new potential!
